Best Things to do in Lahaina, Maui - Surfing Hub

If you're planning a trip to the beautiful Hawaiian Island of Maui, chances are you're going to be stopping in to the town of Lahaina. Why? Because Lahaina is one of the coolest little Hawaiian surf towns in not only Maui, but also all of Hawaii. In fact, it's such a chill surf spot, that many people set up in Lahaina for their entire vacation in Maui, and just do day trips to other spots on the island. That's what we did and, trust me, it was laid back and perfect. So, now that Lahaina has piqued your interest, what are some of the best things to do in Lahaina, Maui?

Surfing in Lahaina

Since my travel blog is heavily influenced by surfing, I've got to mention this first. Lahaina, as mentioned above, is a surf town. Therefore, there is surf here. The waves can get relatively big, but there are also a number of days throughout the year where the waves are small, chill and perfect for surfing lessons. And Lahaina offers tons of surfing lessons. Check out Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy. The staff there is super friendly. They also rent probably the best surfboards in Lahaina, even if you don't need any surfing lessons. Either way, just be careful when you're on the water. The waves break over a shallow reef, so fall flat if you fall. And watch your hands when you're paddling. I cut my hands a few times on the reef. Surfing on those chill Lahaina beaches with the island of Molokai in the background is for sure, though, one of the best things to do in Lahaina, Maui.

Maui Happy Hour

In Lahaina, Maui, we went to sleep fairly early every night, which was awesome because we were up early every morning. You'll find that Lahaina in general goes to bed very early (it's not a late night party spot like Waikiki). So, how and when do Lahaina locals and tourists kick back and relax? At Maui happy hour of course! Happy hours in Lahaina typically start around 2PM and end around 5 or 6. My personal favourite was at a place called Down the Hatch. It's literally down a flight of stairs in the main square in Lahaina. The drink specials and the vibe there are awesome, as it's typically packed and they usually have live music. The only downside is you can't see the water.

If you're looking for a happy hour on the water, check out Betty's Beach Cafe. They've got some solid happy hour deals, a tiki-style space, and, of course, an awesome view of the crashing waves. It's a little bit away from the main strip in Lahaina, so it's usually less crowded than some of the other happy hour bars.

Lahaina Shopping

One of the best things to do in Lahaina, Maui is to simply shop. Why? Because the Main Street in Lahaina is filled with all sorts of cool little craft, souvenir and surf shops! While you're at it, stop in at Cafe Cafe for an Acai bowl. They made one of the best ones I had in all of Hawaii. And trust me. When you're walking around in the heat all day, you'll want one of these refreshing bowls.

So, if you're planning a trip to Maui, definitely consider staying in Lahaina, or even just visiting it. You'll experience some great surfing in Maui, enjoy one (or several) happy hour drinks, and grab yourself some cool souvenirs. Oh, and make sure you watch a sunset or two as well. That's also one of the best things to do in Lahaina, Maui. Mahalo.
